This is an excellent controller for iOS and the AppleTV. Very responsive, very low latency, and very comfortable too. It’s compatible with most current iOS devices (the latest Apple TV along with most iPhones and iPads). It should also work with Macs too. But — because it’s using Apple’s proprietary game controller protocol it will not work with other things like Android devices, PCs, etc. Apple eco system only – that’s how Apple likes it :).

I tested the controller with a few Apple TV games I owned and was impressed with how well both the directional pad and controller sticks function in game. Most games on iPhone and iPad released in the last 2-3 years and nearly all Apple TV games will support it. Steelseries also has an app for firmware updates that strangely doesn’t work on the AppleTV but does on iPhone/iPad/iPod Touch. The app also has a curated list of games that are compatible with the controller.
Unlike their similar Steelseries Stratus XL I looked at a few months ago the Nimbus has a built in battery that will charge with a lightning cable. That’s the same cable that charges the Apple TV remote and other recent iOS devices. But they don’t include a charger or a lightning cable in the box. You’ll need to use what you already have for that. Battery life is rated at 40 hours and in my testing I have no reason to doubt that. I wish I had 40 hours to play games to know for sure ! 🙂
The bottom line? If you have an Apple TV / iPad / iPhone etc. and want a game controller this is the one to get.
